NEW BLOOD
They didn’t seem to understand what I meant
When I told them that I thought I’d been sent
Because you know there was a job to be done
And it had to be run The right way
It seemed they didn’t comprehend what I said
They gave the vibes they thought they’d been misled
But I was only trying to help them out
And I had the clout To succeed
Business runs in a particular way
The world of commerce wasn’t built in a day
You need time for people to have their say
But sometimes decisions must be made without delay
Industry can’t survive without ideas
But change always brings its share of fears
Sometimes someone stands out among their peers
They’re the ones who build successful careers
I told them that we really need to consult
If we’re ever going to get a result
But they insisted on doing their own thing
Ignoring what I could bring To the table

WHEN REMBRANDT CAME TO HULL
1661 With thoughts and memories unspoken
No dignity remained A genius bent and broken
Bankrupt in Amsterdam Lost his home and his studio too
Apprentices and clients Left, believing he would not pull through
So Rembrandt came to Hull
He got onto a ship The story is he stowed away
Recognised of course The captain’s portrait was his pay
Crossed the Sea to Hull Where his problems wouldn’t be known
He could build a following Create a brand new venture of his own
When Rembrandt came to Hull
Did he keep on painting all the time he was away ?
Did he keep his talent whilst his life was in limbo ?
Did he paint more masters worthy of that accolade ?
We only know the portrait of the man with arms akimbo
By 1662 The call from home was strong
He returned to Amsterdam He wasn’t away that long
It’s where he ought to be He yearned for Holland once again
In those few months in England He didn’t ever let his talent wane
When Rembrandt came to Hull
Did he have a patron or a wealthy clientele ?
Did he make a fortune, solve his problems at a stroke ?
Did the wealthy merchants pay him handsome fees as well ?
Did he go home wealthy ? He could have still been broke.
A hundred years on A fire hit Hull’s old town
Artwork was destroyed As a mansion was burned down
We don’t know what was lost No inventory of the estate
It’s maybe speculation
But there could have been some paintings that he made
When Rembrandt came to Hull

A SONG FOR AMY
She was a girl who came from a Northern City
Known for her brains she was sharp and witty
Some people said that they thought she was pretty
She moved down to London to find employment
Used her connections to get herself an appointment
Bought herself a plane just for her enjoyment
She flew West into the sunset
North into the darkness
South past the equator
Even to Australia
She was the first person to fly to many places
Winner of several trophies and races
She became one of the world’s most famous faces
But when the war came Despite all her fame
She was happy for her name To be put forward as a volunteer
Never given time to train She flew every type of plane
In blinding sun and driving rain With never any sign of fear
She flew West into the sunset North into the darkness
South past the equator Even to Australia
She was flying some kind of special mission
Nobody seemed to know her position
Next thing she was posted as missing
Presumed lost

THE WOMEN OF HESSLE ROAD
Words and Music by John Brien
There was the triple trawler tragedy in 1968
Three trawlers, all from Hull, sunk in quick succession
The fishermen’s wives and mothers had had as much as they could take
They knew things had to change and fast and they set out on a mission.
Three trawlers sunk A community torn apart
They took up the cause And the people took them to heart
They asked the questions No-one’d ever dared before
They knew who ask And they knew what to ask for
The politicians said, “They’re just a load of uneducated fishermen’s wives”.
They said, “We’re a group of women fighting for our men’s lives”.
The politicians said “They’re just some women with far too much to say
Let’s ignore them and hope they’ll go away”.
Three trawlers sunk A community torn apart
They took up the cause And the people took them to heart
They asked the questions No-one’d ever dared before
They knew who ask And they knew what to ask for
The politicians said, “They’re unsophisticated, in cloud cuckoo land”.
They said, “We’re a group of women trying to make you understand”.
The politicians said “They’re just some women with far too much to say
They said, “We’re trying to find a better way”.
Three trawlers sunk A community torn apart
They took up the cause And the people took them to heart
They asked the questions No-one’d ever dared before
They knew who ask And they knew what to ask for
The men said "upset the trawler owners and we’ll never get another trip
We’ll be blacklisted and ostracised, barred from every ship"
They went to see the government - the men they needed to meet
They talked to the Prime Minister down in Downing Street
A change of law soon followed; It was their first success -
A radio officer on every ship who could send out an SOS.
Three trawlers sunk A community torn apart
They took up the cause And the people took them to heart
They asked the questions No-one’d ever dared before
They knew who ask And they knew what to ask for
The politicians said, “They’re unimaginative, won’t have any ideas”.
They said, “We’re a group of women fighting for our men’s careers”.
The politicians said “They’re just some women with far too much to say”.
But they couldn’t be ignored and finally they got their way
Three trawlers sunk A community torn apart
They took up the cause And the people took them to heart
They asked the questions No-one’d ever dared before
They knew who ask And they knew what to ask for
