THE WOMEN OF HESSLE ROAD

Words and Music by John Brien

There was the triple trawler tragedy in 1968
Three trawlers, all from Hull, sunk in quick succession
The fishermen’s wives and mothers had had as much as they could take
They knew things had to change and fast and they set out on a mission.

Three trawlers sunk A community torn apart
They took up the cause And the people took them to heart
They asked the questions No-one’d ever dared before
They knew who ask And they knew what to ask for

The politicians said, “They’re just a load of uneducated fishermen’s wives”.
They said, “We’re a group of women fighting for our men’s lives”.
The politicians said “They’re just some women with far too much to say
Let’s ignore them and hope they’ll go away”.

Three trawlers sunk A community torn apart
They took up the cause And the people took them to heart
They asked the questions No-one’d ever dared before
They knew who ask And they knew what to ask for

The politicians said, “They’re unsophisticated, in cloud cuckoo land”.
They said, “We’re a group of women trying to make you understand”.
The politicians said “They’re just some women with far too much to say
They said, “We’re trying to find a better way”.

Three trawlers sunk A community torn apart
They took up the cause And the people took them to heart
They asked the questions No-one’d ever dared before
They knew who ask And they knew what to ask for

The men said "upset the trawler owners and we’ll never get another trip
We’ll be blacklisted and ostracised, barred from every ship"

They went to see the government - the men they needed to meet
They talked to the Prime Minister down in Downing Street
A change of law soon followed; It was their first success -
A radio officer on every ship who could send out an SOS.

Three trawlers sunk A community torn apart
They took up the cause And the people took them to heart
They asked the questions No-one’d ever dared before
They knew who ask And they knew what to ask for

The politicians said, “They’re unimaginative, won’t have any ideas”.
They said, “We’re a group of women fighting for our men’s careers”.
The politicians said “They’re just some women with far too much to say”.
But they couldn’t be ignored and finally they got their way

Three trawlers sunk A community torn apart
They took up the cause And the people took them to heart
They asked the questions No-one’d ever dared before
They knew who ask And they knew what to ask for
