lyrics

WHEN REMBRANDT CAME TO HULL

1661 With thoughts and memories unspoken
No dignity remained A genius bent and broken
Bankrupt in Amsterdam Lost his home and his studio too
Apprentices and clients Left, believing he would not pull through
So Rembrandt came to Hull

He got onto a ship The story is he stowed away
Recognised of course The captain’s portrait was his pay
Crossed the Sea to Hull Where his problems wouldn’t be known
He could build a following Create a brand new venture of his own
When Rembrandt came to Hull

Did he keep on painting all the time he was away ?
Did he keep his talent whilst his life was in limbo ?
Did he paint more masters worthy of that accolade ?
We only know the portrait of the man with arms akimbo

By 1662 The call from home was strong
He returned to Amsterdam He wasn’t away that long
It’s where he ought to be He yearned for Holland once again
In those few months in England He didn’t ever let his talent wane
When Rembrandt came to Hull

Did he have a patron or a wealthy clientele ?
Did he make a fortune, solve his problems at a stroke ?
Did the wealthy merchants pay him handsome fees as well ?
Did he go home wealthy ? He could have still been broke.

A hundred years on A fire hit Hull’s old town
Artwork was destroyed As a mansion was burned down
We don’t know what was lost No inventory of the estate
It’s maybe speculation
But there could have been some paintings that he made
When Rembrandt came to Hull
